Bench provides dedicated human bookkeepers working in its own software rather than QuickBooks or Xero, with tax filing available as a bundled tier. It also offers a separate service where certified bookkeepers work directly inside your QuickBooks Online account at an hourly rate. Bench shut down abruptly in December 2024 and was acquired days later by Employer.com; the current site presents Bench as part of Mainstreet. That history is the single most important fact for a buyer evaluating it.
Who it is for
Choose Bench if: An owner-operated small business that wants a human to own the books at a predictable monthly price and does not need accrual-heavy reporting.
Look elsewhere if: Bench ceased operations without notice on 27 December 2024 and was acquired days later — customers lost access to their books during the gap. Continuity is a real, documented risk here in a way it is not for most vendors, or if any of the limitations below are load-bearing for your business.

Strengths
- Lowest published entry price for a service with a dedicated human bookkeeper ($199/mo)
- Bundled tax filing at $599/mo is competitive against buying books and tax separately
- The hourly QuickBooks-native option is a genuinely different product: your ledger stays yours
- Long operating history and a large installed base
Limitations
- Bench ceased operations without notice on 27 December 2024 and was acquired days later — customers lost access to their books during the gap. Continuity is a real, documented risk here in a way it is not for most vendors.
- The core service keeps books in proprietary software; exporting to a normal accounting system is an extra step
- Grow tier is limited to businesses under $250K annual revenue
- Ownership has changed twice in under two years, and the current brand relationship with Mainstreet is not fully explained on the site
What we could not verify
Most sites in this category would state these as facts. We list them as gaps, and they are the questions to put to Bench (part of Mainstreet) directly.
- The relationship between Employer.com (2024 acquirer) and the Mainstreet branding now on the site is not explained publicly
- How much of the categorization work is automated versus manual is not disclosed
